Practical guide to migrating your digital presence securely and without interruption.
Registering a domain is one of the first steps in building any company’s digital presence. However, over time, it is common for the need to migrate the domain name from one provider to another to arise, whether due to costs, better support, additional services, or consolidation strategies.
At ARGOsoft Group, we frequently assist our clients in this process to ensure that the transition is secure, fast, and does not affect the operation of their website or institutional emails.
Below, we explain what you need and what steps to follow to migrate your domain correctly.
What does migrating a domain mean?
Migrating a domain involves transferring its administration from your current provider (registrar A) to a new one (registrar B). This change does not affect your web content, emails, or files, provided it is managed correctly.
Why migrate your domain?
- Better customer service or technical support
- More competitive renewal prices
- Access to more comprehensive tools (DNS, security, etc.)
- Consolidation of all your domains with a single provider
- Problems with your current provider
What do you need to migrate your domain?
Here are the key elements to start the migration:
1. Access to the control panel of your current registrar.
You must be able to manage your domain from the platform of the provider where you originally purchased it.
2. Unlock the domain for transfer.
For security reasons, domains are locked by default to prevent unauthorized transfers. You need to manually unlock it from your current provider’s panel.
3. Updated administrative email address for the domain.
Confirmation of the transfer will be sent to the email address of the domain’s administrative contact. Make sure it is active and up to date.
You can verify this using Whois Lookup.
4. Authorization code (Auth Code or EPP Key).
This is a unique code that acts as a transfer password. It must be requested from your current provider.
Without this code, you will not be able to start the migration.
5. Advance notice (don’t wait until the last minute).
Transfers can take between 5 and 7 business days, so you should not wait until the domain is about to expire. Ideally, you should do this at least 30 days before expiration.
Steps to migrate your domain to another provider
- Check the requirements of the new provider (ARGOsoft Group can help you with that).
- Unlock your domain and request the EPP code.
- Start the transfer with the new provider and enter the code.
- Authorize the transfer from the administration email.
- Wait for confirmation (it may take several days).
- Verify that the DNS records and website are still working properly.
Important: If you use email with your domain (e.g., Google Workspace or Microsoft 365), be sure to copy all DNS records (MX, TXT, SPF, etc.) before transferring. Incorrect configuration could affect the delivery of your emails.
Conclusion
Migrating your domain name doesn’t have to be a complicated process, but it must be done carefully to avoid errors that could affect your website or email. With the right steps and guidance, you can complete the transfer without interruption and enjoy the benefits of a better provider.
At ARGOsoft Group, we offer technical support to migrate your domain safely, quickly, and with all the configuration you need to continue operating smoothly.
